Mom’s Sugar Cookie Recipe

I am not a big sweets eater. There are a lot of sweets I can pass up. But my mom’s sugar cookies are my weakness! From fall to spring, I am in trouble…we make these sugar cookies for every holiday!

I don’t eat a lot of sweets.  I can pass up almost anything.  I’m not a cake eater.  I don’t go crazy for chocolate.  And I definitely don’t go gaga over candy.

But…. I do like chocolate if it is mixed with peanut butter or mint.  🙂

There are very few things that I cannot resist. But give me anything with peanut butter and chocolate, and I’m a goner.  My favorites are peanut butter bars, peanut butter cookies, and monster cookies.  I can’t stop myself if they are in the room.

I would rather run an extra mile than give up those treats.

And then there are my mom’s sugar cookies.

From Halloween to Easter, I really struggle.

I LOVE her sugar cookies!  And the strange thing is, even if I make my own, hers are STILL BETTER.  I don’t know what she does!

But I can never eat just one!

And, neither can my boys.

I do not know the proper word for making a batch five times.  LOL!  You know you double it, you triple it, you quadruple it.  What’s the next one?  Quintuple it?  😉  I have no idea!

But when I make these sugar cookies, I have to ‘quintuple’ it!  Or they get eaten up in one day.

Every year I make these cookies for Halloween, but I have been feeling lazy this year!  So yesterday I forced myself to make them, and I’m glad I did!  I only tripled the batch, though, because I just didn’t want to frost all of those cookies!

Boy, that was a mistake.  Because we have hardly any left.  And also because I didn’t have to frost many at all!  Turns out my boys are finally old enough to really get into frosting cookies!  Sure, they aren’t picture-worthy, but they are fun, just the same!

And they still taste the same!

Sugar cookie ingredients

3/4 cup butter

2 1/4 cup flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon almond extract

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup sugar

For the frosting:

2 cups powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

food coloring

How to make my mom’s sugar cookies

Blend together the butter and sugar.

Add egg, salt, almond extract, and vanilla.

Add in the flour.

You may put the cookie dough in the fridge for an hour at this point, but it is not necessary.

You may also need to add more flour if the dough is sticky. Feel free to add flour as necessary, when rolling the dough out as well.

Roll the. dough out, cut with cookie cutters, and bake on a cookie sheet for 10 to 12 minutes, at 350 degrees.

Let cool.

How to frost mom’s sugar cookies

You can frost with your favorite frosting, or use my mom’s recipe (my favorite!)

Mix 2 cups of powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of milk. Add 1/2 teaspoon of almond extract and the desired food coloring.

You may have to add more milk, or more powdered sugar until your frosting reaches your desired consistency.

I like to add candy flavoring to my icing. I keep the white as almond because it is my ultimate favorite.

But, if I am using green icing, I might add in mint candy oil. If I am using orange, I’ll add orange candy oil. Purple is grape, red is cinnamon, etc. My boys love it when I do that!
