Why have a morning routine?

If you set any goals this summer, momma, make one of them to create a simple summer morning routine.

Let me tell you!

We are almost done with June, and I have been super focused on my summer morning routine. My kids are involved in basketball camp, summer rec, swimming lessons, and baseball. We are literally running all day long!!

And then we head to the lake every Friday.

If I didn’t have a solid summer morning routine, I wouldn’t get anything done this summer!

My mornings are incredibly beneficial. And yours can be too!

A routine is a series of activities that you do every morning to set yourself up for a productive and successful day. It’ll literally make or break your day momma!

Having a morning routine can help you:

·      Start your day with intention

·      Reduce stress and anxiety

·      Boost your energy and mood

·      Improve your focus and productivity

·      Create a sense of structure

The beauty of a simple summer morning routine is that you can get your work done right away! Before the day even starts. Or, at least, get a good start at it.

Plus, most people do their best work in the morning!

And when you have already gotten in the “work mode” and gotten your most important tasks done, you are “in the flow” and you just keep on being productive. All day long. 😉

What is a good morning routine?

Honestly, momma, that’s hard to say. A good routine should be tailored to your needs and preferences – not mine.

Each of us will have different summer morning routines. There is no one-size-fits-all here.

However, there are a few things most people do when creating a healthy morning routine:

·      Wake up at a consistent time every day

·      Drink a glass of water

·      Read, journal, or pray

·      Exercise

·      Eat a healthy, balanced breakfast

·      Plan your day and prioritize your tasks

·      Take a cold shower and get dressed

·      Work

The best advice I can give you is to get your most important tasks done in the morning, preferably before the kids get up.

This might be bible study. Or, if you struggle to get exercise in, then it might be exercise.

And most certainly, it should be work.

I like to do my hardest work tasks in the morning – you know, those things you hate to do. Like pitching. 🙄

Or I’ll do the tasks that bring me the highest return on my investment of time. This might be things like writing a blog post or doing client work.

I’ve found if I get the things I usually put off or struggle with done right away in the morning, I am way more productive (and happy!) the rest of the day. 😁

What is a good early morning routine?

I used to HATE getting up before the kids. I did not want to start my day any earlier than I had to.

But when I discovered that I simply had to, or I wouldn’t meet my goals, well then. That all changed.

Now I willingly get up at five a.m. and LOVE it! In fact, if I don’t get up early, I feel out of sorts the entire day.

A good early morning routine means you get up before the kids get up. This way, you have more quiet, productive time, which sets you up for a productive day.

Here’s my summer morning routine:

·      Up at five a.m.!

·      Then I have a morning coffee while doing my most important work tasks for the day.

·      Anywhere between six and seven, depending on how much time I worked for, I go for a run with my pup. 😁

·      Then I shower, feed the kids, pack their lunches, check their swim bags, and run them to their summer activities.

·      I then come home, about 9:30ish, 9:45ish, and do some morning chores, read the bible, and get back to work – IF my boys don’t have a baseball game. If they have a game, I’m off to the game!

And that’s it! That’s my summer morning routine. And I love it.

If I didn’t get up before the kids, I wouldn’t get in any work time or get to go for a run. ☹️

How do I start a 5 am morning routine?

😂🤣 I can’t believe I’m actually giving advice on this! 😂🤣

I have struggled for YEARS with getting up early.

What finally worked for me?

Believing that I had to get up early if I wanted to monetize my blog and run a successful freelancing business.

I totally convinced myself that there is so much to do, and I’m so busy, that there is no way I’ll get it all done unless I get up earlier.

I really believe that if I don’t get up early, I won’t be successful. 😬

I’ve been getting up early since last winter! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

It was really a mindset change, momma. I had to believe that I could monetize my blog. And then I had to believe that in order to do so, I had to get up early.

Plain and simple.

And it worked!

Funny, what a little motivation can do for you. 😉

But besides changing the way you look at getting up early, here’s a few other things that you can do, to ease into a five a.m. morning routine:

1. Go to bed earlier.

Or gradually shift your bedtime earlier by 15-30 minutes each night.

I used to stay up anywhere from 10:30 to midnight. I just had to start getting up at five, and let nature take its course – I was simply too tired to stay up late.

Nine p.m. quickly became my new normal.

2. Set your alarm for 5 a.m.

You can place it far away from you, so that you have to get up and go turn it off. I’ve actually tried this – I just fell right back into bed afterwards. 😆

What actually got me out of bed when that alarm went off?

My husband.

He was getting up at 5 a.m. to work overtime – to earn some extra money.

The guilt. 🥺

Knowing he was working so hard – and getting up so early – simply so that I could stay home and live my dream… that’s all it took.

There is no way I cannot get up at five a.m. If he’s gonna work this hard for me, then so am I.

3. Prepare the night before.

Have your work ready to go and everything planned out in your planner.

Know what your schedule is, what your top three priorities are, and what activities are going to move that needle the most.

These are the things you will need to work on right away in the morning.

Also, be sure your computer is charged and ready to go.

4. Enjoy a quiet cup of coffee.

One thing that draws me out of bed is knowing I can drink that cup of coffee all by myself. ☺️

The simple joy in that is enough to get up out of bed too.

5. Remind yourself why you are doing this.

When that alarm goes off, and you want to hit the snooze button – or turn it off entirely – take a minute to think about why you are doing this.

Is it to get client work done so that you can play with your kids this afternoon? What happens if you don’t get that work done? Do you have to work then, instead of going to the beach?

Isn’t that extra hour or two in the morning worth that extra hour or two at the beach?

I like to remind myself that if I don’t make any money, I have to go back to work.

And I don’t want that!! 😂🤣

It gets me out of bed every time.

What can you do in the morning in the summer?

The possibilities are endless!

Here are some ideas, to get you started:

·      Read or study the bible

·      Pray

·      Journal

·      Read a book

·      Go for a walk

·      Run or exercise

·      Enjoy a cup of coffee on the deck

·      Do some gardening or yard work

·     Eat a wholesome breakfast

And of course, you should get some work done.

What are some morning routine ideas?

To create a good summer morning routine, all you need to do is simply do one activity right after another, in the same order, every day.

So you could really set your routine any way you want to.

Here’s some ideas to get you started:

·      Immediately make your bed after you get up.

·      Make a cup of coffee and write down your goals for the day.

·      Wake up and drink a glass of water before making a cup of coffee.

·      Water the flowers after going for a run.

·      Write out a chore list after getting your kids’ backpacks ready for the day.

You can pretty much take any activity and attach it to another activity, to make a routine out of it.

To create yours, write down all the things you want to do in the morning. And then start attaching them to things you already do. So that they become habit.

For example, if you want to start reading the bible, set it on the coffee table by the couch. Then, in the morning, make a cup of coffee and grab your bible.

Associate that coffee with reading the bible, so that you naturally grab for it every time you make a cup of coffee!

What is a good summer routine?

What you consider a good routine will be entirely different than what I do!

For example, currently I am trying to make weeding the garden in the evening a part of my routine. It needs to be habit for me. (It’s hard!)

But that might not sound good to you at all! 😆 Your daily schedule will look different.

A good summer routine should balance work and play, though. And it should take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather.

I actually have a post on creating an awesome summer routine! Go check it out!

Creating a simple summer morning routine will help you stay productive and focused while still enjoying the warm weather and spending time with your family.

There are many ways to customize your daily schedule, to meet your own needs and preferences. What matters is not that it’s perfect, but that you are continuously working towards creating healthy habits.
