Want a cool dinner idea that mixes gaming with tasty food? You’ve found it!
Today, I’ve got a delicious venison recipe inspired by Skyrim that gamers and hunters will both enjoy. Even if you don’t like venison stew, you’ll love this recipe!
Even my kids like it! It’s a neat way to pull our entire family together – by adding some Skyrim fun to our meals.
This Orsimer venison dish is like a simple stir fry with venison, veggies, and a tasty sauce. Great for gamer families wanting to make mealtime just a little bit more exciting!

You are probably wondering what would possess us to make such an odd duck meal to begin with, right?
Well, I have this crazy little birthday tradition, where I let the kids pick out what they want for their birthday supper. The sky is the limit here.
I literally make whatever food they order.
Same with the cake.
So a couple of years ago, Carlos decided he wanted Orsimer Venison and Spiced Root Cake. They are recipes in his Elder Scrolls Official Cookbook!
He is obsessed with the Norse culture and loves the Skyrim video game. If you ask him, it’s because he can “kill things and go through the story line”.
I try not to ask too many questions.
But it was so good, we have made it many times since then!
How do you cook venison in Skyrim?
In the game, you just cook the venison over fire.
But here’s how to cook venison for Orsimer Venison in the Skyrim cookbook.
You Will Need:
2 tablespoons of olive oil, divided
1 pound venison, cut into bite-sized pieces
2 tablespoons cornstarch or all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt, plus more for seasoning
1 teaspoon pepper, plus more for seasoning
1 or 2 cloves of garlic
2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger (I just used ground)
¼ cup soy sauce
¼ cup packed brown sugar
Splash of water
Pinch of ground cumin
Pinch of red pepper flakes
To Make Orsimer Venison:
1. Pour 1 tablespoon of the oil into a large sauté pan or skillet over medium heat.
2. In a medium bowl, toss the venison pieces with the cornstarch, salt, and pepper.
3. When the oil is hot, add the venison to the pan and cook until done, turning the meat over occasionally, for about 5 minutes. Remove the meat and set aside.
4. Pour the remaining 1 tablespoon oil into the pan and add the garlic and ginger. Cook for a minute or so, until starting to brown, then add the soy sauce, brown sugar, water, cumin, and red pepper flakes.
5. Cook the sauce for a few minutes until it begins to thicken a little, then add the venison back into the pan.
6. Cook for 1 minute more or so, stirring occasionally so that all the meat is covered equally with sauce.
7. Add more salt and pepper to taste, if necessary, before serving over a bed of cooked rice pilaf.
And I used this rice pilaf recipe. 😉 It’s super delish!!
It’s worth noting, however, that my son and his fiance did not follow the rice pilaf recipe exactly, nor the orsimer venison recipe – in these pictures. They wanted to experiment a bit.
So, if yours doesn’t look exactly like theirs, that’s probably why.
Where Can I Find Venison in Skyrim?
Well, in real life if you want venison your best bet is to hunt for it during hunting season.
But in Skyrim, you can find venison in the following places:
· Looted from deer and elk
· In food containers
· Meat merchants
· In homes
· In cooking areas
I believe you can hunt, buy, and steal venison in Skyrim…
Is it Deer or Elk in Skyrim?
Both. There are two different species of deer in Skyrim, the deer, and the elk. They both give you venison, and they both act and behave the same way.
The elk also gives you elk horns, though.
The deer resembles caribou, while the brown elk resembles an extinct megaloceros.
Is the Elder Scrolls Cookbook Worth it?
Yes!! If your son is a big gaming nerd, like mine is, or he is obsessed with everything Norse, he’ll probably like this cookbook.
It’d make a great birthday gift!
Oh, I know! Surprise him with a birthday supper of Orsimer Venison and the Spice Root Cake, and the cookbook!
He’ll be so impressed.
But on a more practical note… the cookbook actually seems to have a lot recipes that resemble the dishes I grew up on.
I am part Norwegian, though, and my husband has Swedish and Polish heritage. It’s possible the Skyrim recipes are based on real Scandinavian recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation.
It’s also worth mentioning, mostly because my son asked me to, that the Skyrim cookbook is on the Elder Scrolls as a whole, not just Skyrim. Apparently, it’s a whole world, kinda like middle earth.
Again, I try not to ask questions.
At the End of the Day…
At the end of the day, it’s all about building that bond with our children, (as frugally as possible!), isn’t it? I mean, they are the world to us, even if their world is wrapped up in a video game!
Sometimes, to connect with our children, we simply have to meet them where they are at. And this recipe will do just that!
Orsimer Venison is not bad at all! Give it a try.
If you like stir fry, you’ll love it!! And then the next time your hubby wants to go hunting, you won’t groan.
You’ll actually be happy!
