ToggleHey there momma!
Worried about how much screen time your kids are getting? Managing it can be tough with smartphones, tablets, computers, and TVs constantly grabbing their attention!
I’ve seen how too much screen time affects my boys—less physical activity, shorter attention spans, and messed-up sleep patterns. Plus, they get crabby and develop short tempers!
I know I can get more done if they’re on screens, but when I let them play video games for too long, I feel incredibly guilty.
But there’s a better way, momma, and I’ve used it since my oldest, now 26, was little. I’ll show you how to cut down your kids screen time and boost their health and happiness!
The Short & Sweet Version
In this guide, I’ll share tips that have worked wonders for my kids. You’ll find easy strategies for reducing screen time while keeping your kids entertained and healthy.
- Set specific times for electronic devices to establish boundaries.
- Promote physical activities and outdoor play to replace media use.
- Offer engaging non-screen options like puzzles, board games, or crafts.
- Make certain areas of the house, like the dining room or bedrooms, electronic-free.
- Model good habits by limiting your own usage.
- Choose educational content and set parental controls for safe usage.
- Talk to your kids about balancing screen time with other activities.
- Allow kids to earn screen time minutes by completing chores, reading, or other productive activities.
Implementing these strategies will create a healthier, happier environment for your kids.
Why Should Parents Limit Screen Time
Limiting screen time for our little ones isn’t just about closing devices; it’s about opening up a whole world of opportunities for their growth and well-being. When we cut down on screen time, we see an increase in physical activity—think playing outside, riding bikes, or engaging in sports—all of which make for healthier bodies and minds.
Less screen exposure also means more time for imaginative play, reading, and cognitive development, which are so important for boosting creativity and problem-solving skills. Plus, managing screen time leads to better sleep quality, as those electronic devices can mess with natural sleep patterns.
By encouraging more face-to-face interactions and family time, we can cultivate stronger emotional bonds and better social skills in our children as well.
Remember, momma, the goal is to create a balanced environment where your child can thrive!
Screen Time Recommendations by Age
Birth to 18 months
For the tiniest tots, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends avoiding screens altogether, except for video chatting. This helps ensure your little one’s developing brain isn’t overwhelmed by the fast-paced images and sounds.
18 months to 2 years
Introducing screens at this stage should be done thoughtfully. Choose high-quality educational content, like Sesame Street or PBS Kids, and watch together to help them understand and learn from what they’re seeing.
2 to 5 years
Keep screens to no more than one hour per day. Co-viewing with your child is key to helping them understand the content and apply what they learn to the real world.
6 years and older
Consistency and balance are crucial. Aim to limit screen time to no more than 1-2 hours per day.
Encourage a variety of activities that don’t involve screens, such as reading, hobbies, and playing outside. Establish clear screen time rules about the types of video games and media your kids can access and always remain engaged with what they are watching or playing.
By sticking to these age-appropriate recommendations, you’re setting the stage for a healthy relationship with screens and creating a well-rounded child.
How to Reduce Your Child’s Screen Time
Reducing your child’s screen time might seem like a daunting task, but with a few simple steps and a consistent approach, it can be quite manageable – and even fun!
The key is to focus on gradually introducing alternatives that capture their interest and engage them in meaningful ways.
Start by setting clear and realistic goals for your kids, and remember, it’s all about balance. With the right strategies, you can help your child build healthier habits while also discovering new passions and activities.
Here’s how to make the process smoother, momma:
- Set Clear and Consistent Limits
- Create a Family Media Plan
- Engage in Screen-Free Family Activities
- Encourage New Hobbies and Interests
- Designate Screen-Free Zones
- Be a Role Model
- Schedule Educational and Necessary Screen Use
- Maintain Consistent Effort and Creativity
By following these steps, you’ll find it much easier to manage your child’s screen time, while also encouraging a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.
Remember, consistency is key, and every little effort counts.
With a bit of creativity and a lot of persistence, you can nurture your child’s growth and well-being, both on and off the screen!!
How to Handle Resistance to Screen Time Limits
Setting limits can sometimes be met with resistance, but don’t worry—there are ways to make the new rules seem less harsh.
First, talk to your child about why these limits are set. Explain the benefits of reduced screen time, like improved sleep, better focus on schoolwork, and more quality family moments.
They might roll their eyes or hate you for saying it, but remind them that you love them and are doing this for their own good! 😁
Next, set reasonable limits together. When they have a say in the rules, they’re more likely to follow them.
This collaborative approach creates a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Consistency is crucial, momma!! Ensure that the rules and consequences are clear and applied consistently.
If your child knows what to expect, they’re less likely to push back. And trust me—they will push back!
So stay strong!
Offer plenty of alternatives that cater to their unique interests. Whether it’s a new hobby, a family game night, or a sport, fill their time with engaging activities to make the transition smoother and more enjoyable.
Finally, be patient and persistent. Resistance won’t fade overnight, but with consistent effort, understanding, and encouragement, your child will adjust to the new household rules.
Celebrate small victories and keep reinforcing the positive reasons for these changes. You’re setting up lifelong habits that will benefit your child in many ways, momma!

When my oldest three were little, I got very creative with how I managed screen time. Because it was just way too easy for me to let them stay plugged in all day!
I created “PlayStation minutes”! (Because, back then, the playstation was the latest and greatest! 😆)
These minutes allowed me to manage their online time without being the bad guy or without all of the mom guilt.
How doe it work?
How to use Screen Time Tickets
Essentially, your child earns their screen time! Without ‘minutes,’ they can’t play or watch. They earn ‘minutes’ by doing activities listed on their screen time chart, similar to earning an allowance for chores. 😉
To get started, download the customizable charts. You can print one as is or add in your own activities.
To create your own, list activities you want to encourage, like reading, completing schoolwork, playing outside, brushing teeth, making the bed, or playing nicely with siblings. Assign each activity a set number of minutes.
When your child completes an activity, they earn those minutes to use whenever they want. It’s brilliant!
Some kids spend their minutes immediately, while others let them pile up. If they one day turn in five hours of minutes, so be it! 😂 🤣 They earned them, so they can use them.
Why Does This Work So Well?
Why do I like “PlayStation” minutes so much?
1. It takes the pressure off of you.
You are no longer the bad guy. They can’t be mad at you for saying no when they want to play. If you say no now, it’s because they don’t have any minutes. It’s up to them to go earn more minutes.
2. You don’t have to monitor or manage anything (except the timer!).
If they have minutes, they can play. If they don’t, they don’t play. End of story. Easy breezy. 🙃
3. It teaches them about managing resources, similar to managing money.
They can earn and spend their minutes, just like they earn and spend money. And they can spend immediately, or save for later.
4. It instills your values in them.
They earn minutes for doing the things you deem as important, such as playing outside, reading, practicing the piano, playing nicely with their siblings, or whatever. This teaches them your family values.
5. It teaches responsibility.
Ultimately, some of the ways to earn minutes are by completing certain chores. Assigning children chores teaches responsibility.
See how easy it is? My oldest boys laugh and tell stories of having to weed the sandbox for four hours to earn five minutes of screen time!
*Side note: That is NOT AT ALL TRUE!! They did have to weed the sandbox, but it didn’t take that long, and they did earn more than just five minutes. 😂 🤣
They think I’m too soft on the youngest three, so they like to make things sound so much worse than they really were.
But they speak fondly of their ‘PlayStation minutes’. And it was actually my 17-year-old who suggested bringing them back, for the younger boys.
So, to get your screen time minutes, just enter your email address below. Then just download them and print.
(It works best to print them on cardstock.)
And no more mom guilt about screen time!! It is now out of your hands!!
