Classic Apple Crisp

Want to make apple crisp the way Grandma used to? Then you’ll love this quick & easy classic apple crisp!

Are you craving that good, old-fashioned classic apple crisp that your grandma used to make?

🙋🏻‍♀️

Sign me up!!

I love it best with ice cream on top, but my boys like it with Cool Whip.

And this time of the year, everyone is craving it.

So, I whipped a few up over the weekend!

And my poor little Prince Ali.  🤣 😆

He saw the box of apples I used to make apple sauce and kept asking me to make apple crisp.

“Mom! Are you going to make me some apple cider yet?”

“Apple cider, Ali, or apple crisp?”

“Apple crisp! I keep getting them mixed up!” 🤦🏻‍♀️

😂🤣

So, when I finally pulled out the apples this weekend…

“Mom is it ready yet?!?” he asks, as I’m peeling apples.

“No, Ali.”

“Mom is it ready now??”, he asks, as I’m making the crumb topping.

“No, Ali.”

“Mom is it ready now?”, he asks as I’m putting it in the oven.

“No, Ali.”

“Mom!  It’s ready now!” he exclaims, as I’m pulling it out of the oven.

“No, honey.  It has to cool first.”  His face falls.

😂 🤣

I think he single-handedly ate half that pan!

Lovin’ that classic apple crisp!

I like to make apple crisp every year, when we get a lot of apples from family and friends. We also make homemade crock pot apple sauce, homemade apple cider, and many more yummy apple recipes that I’ll someday get posted for you.  😆

But my boys LOVE my apple crisp.

You can freeze apple crisp to bake later.
I froze a couple of apple crisps for my big boys 😁

In fact, whenever I make some, I have to make two smaller pans for my big boys.  I freeze them until they come home, and then they can just grab them and bake them, whenever they are ready to.

They love me.  😁

So, if you want to earn some good ol’ fashioned brownie points with your kiddos, then let’s get started making this classic apple crisp!

How to make classic apple crisp

This apple crisp recipe is super easy to make.

The hardest part is peeling the apples.  (Unless you have an apple peeler).

Peeling the apples is a labor of love.

fill your pan 3/4 full of apples
Fill the pan (nearly full!) of peeled and thinly sliced apples.

So, peel and slice enough apples to fill a cake pan ¾ of the way full.  Slice the apples pretty thin.  And don’t go easy on the apple! They bake down. So, you’d rather have too many apples than not enough, or you will have barely any apple in your crisp.

After you slice the apples, mix ¾ cup of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon together in a small bowl. Sprinkle this evenly over the apples.

mix sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over the apples
Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over the apples.

Next, create the crumb topping.

Now, my recipe makes A LOT of crumb topping, because, let’s face it – that’s the best part.  😁  So, if you prefer less crumb topping, cut this recipe in half.

Combine 2 cups of flour, 1 ½ cups of oatmeal, and 2 cups of brown sugar.

Mix flour, oats and brown sugar. Cut in the butter.
Don’t go by my picture! I doubled the recipe, because I was making some to freeze.

Take your pastry cutter and cut in 1 cup of butter.

Just take your pastry cutter and keep smushing that butter down into the crumb mixture, pulling the butter towards your belly. Then smash it down again, and push the butter away from your belly, almost in a clumsy cutting pattern.

Work that butter through until the mixture is moist and crumbly.

Generously cover the apples with the crumb mixture.

Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Easy peasy!

Eat it warm, with ice cream or cool whip.

Enjoy!

Notes

You can cut the crumb mixture in half if it is too much streusel for you. We like a lot of streusel topping.
