Is it possible to work from home as a stay-at-home mom?
Yes!! It is possible to work from home as a stay-at-home mom. But it is a lot of work.
You need discipline, momma, and determination. If you are starting your own online business, you also need preservation, motivation, and the willingness to learn new skills.
A great work-at-home mom routine can make it so much easier, too.
And above all else, you need to believe in yourself, momma. Because if you don’t, you won’t make it.
How do new moms work from home?
Working from home as a new stay at home mom can be tough. Here’s my top tips for getting it done:
1. Create a work-from-home routine that fits your lifestyle.
2. Choose only three tasks. Focus on them. If you get more done – bonus!
3. Focus on results, not hours. You’ll never get full-time hours in, momma, so focus on just getting those top three done.
4. Work in increments. Learn to work five minutes here, ten minutes there, etc. It’s not ideal, but it’ll work for now.
5. Know your values. Make time for what’s important to you during the day.
6. Delegate and let stuff go. Ask for help, and let the stuff go that doesn’t serve you well right now.
How do full time moms work from home?
As a full time stay at home mom, it will be hard to work from home.
If you home school or you have little kids at home, chances are, you will not be able to put in 40 hours a week – unless you get really creative. 😉
But it can be done! Here’s my top tips:
1. Create a home office. You need your own workspace. The kitchen table, or a corner in the living room, will work. But your own office will be so much better.
2. Create a daily routine. Especially if you are starting an online business. Knowing what tasks you will do on which days will help you to stay on task.
3. Batch tasks. If you have a few blog posts to write, do the outlines on Monday, research the posts on Tuesday, and write them Wednesday and Thursday. Come Friday, all you have to do is edit and schedule!
4. Wake up early or stay up late. I’d recommend waking up early, if at all possible. When you start the day of right, you are more productive!
How should a stay-at-home mom set a schedule?
Here are my top tips for setting your own schedule, momma:
1. Set your family priorities. You won’t be able to do everything you want to do. Not even close! So, decide what’s important, and let the rest go.
2. Delegate. Since you can’t do it all, you do need to ask for help. Bring your husband on board. Use family and friends, and hire out for things like housecleaning or babysitting, if you can.
3. Create a daily routine. You need a daily sahm schedule, and then, within your work time, you also need a daily work routine! 😉
4. Block out some work time. I use the 5 block planning system for my days. More on that below.
5. Be flexible! You need to just go with the flow, momma. Some days will be great, and you’ll get a lot done! And others will suck. 🤪 It’s just how it goes! Roll with it.
How do I schedule my day as a working mom?
The 5 block planning system works perfectly for me, momma! Here’s how to do it:
Pre-morning: Get up early – we’re talking 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m. here! I know, I know. 🙄 You’re groaning right now. But how bad do you want this thing, momma?!? 😁
This pre-morning routine is for you, to do what you need to do before you start your workday. I use this time to pitch if I need a couple more clients. If not, I use it to work on freebies and emails.
You can use it to work if you’d like. Or you can use it to exercise, pray, read the bible, or simply enjoy a cup of hot coffee alone before all the chaos starts! 😁
Morning: This is when your kids wake up and you start your day.
I use this time to get them off to school. I might also do a few odd chores around the house, as well, exercise or read the bible during this quiet time.
You can do whatever you want with this time, but it is your regular morning routine, with your kiddos.
Work: This is your work time, momma!
When this block happens is dependent on you and your family schedule. I work while my kids are at school. Your work block might be while they nap, or while dad watches them in the evening, or after they go to bed. 🤷🏻♀️
Whenever it is, make sure you use your work block to work!! Be very deliberate about it. Choose the top three tasks that will bring you the biggest return on your investment – your time!
What’s going to move the needle the most for you today, momma? That is what you should be doing during your work block.
Afternoon: This block is your afternoon routine with your kiddos, momma.
For me, that means when they come home from school. For you, it might be when they wake up from nap time.
You’ll run through your family responsibilities during this block. I’m getting snacks, talking about school, hanging up backpacks, checking homework, etc.
I might do some laundry or vacuum as well. The boys have chores they have to do during this block too.
And then I start supper.
Use yours how you’d like!
Evening: And of course, your evening block is at the end of the day. You might squeeze in a little more work time, if you’d like, after the kids go to bed.
Normally, my evening block consists of supper, dishes, and playing with my kids. After they go to bed, I hang out with my hubby a bit before hitting the hay myself.
